"Democracy is not something you believe in or a place to hang your hat, but it's something you do. You participate. If you stop doing it, democracy crumbles."

Voter Registration Drive and Get-Out-the-Vote.
We have teamed up with Students-in-Government (SIG), the ASSU, the NAACP, Students for a Sustainable Stanford, and Amnesty International to implement the most expansive voter registration drive that Stanford has ever seen. Our efforts will begin immediately as school starts and will require involvement from as many students as possible. Please contact Andy Parker (parkera@stanford.edu) to find out how to get involved. Following the non-partisan Voter Registration drive, we will move into full Get-Out-the-Vote mode with help from other progressive groups, including MoveOn.
Issue Campaign.
We are also excited to launch a weekly issue campaign titled "What's At Stake." Working with different progressive groups on campus who specialize in specific policy areas—the environment, civil rights and liberties, LGBT issues, and poverty—we will engage the student body through active outreach through flyering campaigns, tabling in White Plaza, weekly informative e-mails, bringing in speakers to campus, etc. to educate students about the importance of these issues in the next election. We will pay special attention to defeating Proposition 8.
Campaign opportunities with the Obama campaign and others in the area.
Beyond opportunities to get involved on campus, we will also be working very closely with Silicon Valley Obama Office and the Peninsula Young Democrats (PYD) to make our presence felt in the surrounding community. This will include weekend canvassing expeditions for Senator Obama and local candidates, phone banking for these campaigns, and trips to swing states. We will also make sure that you guys have plenty of opportunities to volunteer at local fundraisers. All of this will culminate with a coordinated trip with PYD to Las Vegas the weekend before the election.
Pizza and Politics.
In an effort to infuse dialogue and political discussion into the Stanford Democrats, we will be hosting weekly debate meetings with pizza. For the most part, we have been a campaign related group and have experienced lulls whenever we weren’t involved with a campaign. Pizza and Politics will remedy this problem and keep the group more active year round.
Opening up the group more to our members.
We encourage our non-executive members to plan and develop campus and campaign events of their own. Please forward these ideas to Andy Parker (parkera@stanford.edu) and he will make sure that you get help cultivating them.
